What Causes a “Turkey Neck” and Can It Be Corrected?

Mature blonde woman feels confident with her new neck contours after neck lift.

A smooth, defined neck can change considerably with age. You may begin to notice loose skin beneath your chin, vertical neck bands, or a less distinct transition between your jawline and neck—changes commonly described as a “turkey neck.” Although skincare and healthy habits can support skin quality, they cannot always correct the structural changes responsible for significant neck laxity.

At Krummen Plastic Surgery in Cincinnati, board-certified plastic and reconstructive surgeon Dr. Donna Krummen brings more than 20 years of experience to facial rejuvenation. She evaluates the different factors contributing to neck aging to determine which treatment can provide natural-looking improvement for you.

What Causes a Turkey Neck?

Aging is a major contributor. Over time, your skin produces less collagen and elastin, making it thinner and less able to stay firm. The underlying platysma muscles may also weaken or separate, contributing to prominent vertical bands and a looser neck contour.

Genetics can influence how early these changes appear. Weight loss may also leave excess skin behind, while localized fat beneath the chin can make the neck appear heavier and reduce jawline definition.

Often, a turkey neck results from several of these changes occurring together, which is why the appropriate treatment varies from person to person.

Can a Neck Lift Correct Loose Neck Skin?

A neck lift can address several components of an aging neck during one procedure. Depending on your anatomy, Dr. Krummen may remove excess skin, address underlying muscle laxity, and improve the contours beneath the chin and along the jawline.

The goal isn’t to create an unnaturally tight neck. Instead, surgeons carefully plan the procedure to restore smoother contours and better definition while keeping your appearance balanced with the rest of your face.

Do You Need a Neck Lift or Liposuction?

If your primary concern is excess fat and your skin still has good elasticity, liposuction alone may provide sufficient improvement. However, liposuction cannot remove loose skin or tighten lax neck muscles. When these concerns are significant, a neck lift may be more appropriate.

Some patients benefit from combining techniques, and a neck lift may also be performed with a facelift when aging affects both the lower face and neck.
