Nonsurgical facial rejuvenation has opened the door for millions of men and women to maintain the youthful appearance they want without disrupting their busy schedule. In our Cincinnati office, dermal fillers play an essential role in helping our patients manage their aging process.
What Are Dermal Fillers?
Dermal fillers are injectable products that we use strategically to reduce common signs of aging such as nasolabial folds and deflated cheeks and lips. As we age, the fat pads beneath the skin break down. It’s important to realize that the natural decline of collagen robs superficial tissues of the firmness needed to support taut, smooth facial contours. Decreased firmness is compounded by the deterioration of the fatty tissue that lies deeper beneath the surface. In addition, collagen loss and fat depletion can create an illusion of facial atrophy. The introduction of appropriate dermal fillers helps to reduce this illusion by adding volume to areas that lost it.
Am I a Good Candidate for Dermal Fillers?
Generally speaking, adults of all ages can be good candidates for dermal fillers. We treat women as well as men in their twenties up to their senior years. If you have moderate to severe wrinkles or creases around your nose, mouth, and chin, or you are beginning to notice jowls along your jawline, a well-chosen dermal filler product can help you improve your satisfaction with your appearance. Men and women concerned with the appearance of their lips, cheeks, and eyes are also good candidates for this convenient injectable treatment.
Side Effects of Dermal Fillers
All things considered, dermal fillers have been safely used around the world for several years. This product niche represents one of the most studied in aesthetic medicine. Data on dermal filler use portrays a safe and efficient method of rejuvenating the face and hands. Severe complications from dermal filler use are rare.
With this in mind, some common side effects can include:
- Localized redness and swelling
- Mild bruising or bleeding at injection sites
Comparatively, some less common side effects can include:
- Asymmetrical results
- Temporary itching or rash
- Under- or over-correction
- Mild skin eruptions
- Filler product can be felt under the skin
It should be noted that the less common risks of dermal filler treatment can be decreased by obtaining treatment from an experienced injector. Furthermore, when a hyaluronic acid filler is selected to correct signs of aging, the product (and results) can be reversed.
Types of Dermal Fillers

Juvéderm Ultra Plus
Juvéderm Ultra Plus XC also introduces hyaluronic acid beneath the skin, and also contains lidocaine. Where Ultra Plus differs from Juvéderm Ultra is in the consistency of the product. Results of Ultra Plus treatment typically last from 9 months to one year.
Radiesse is an established dermal filler that has been used around the world for several years to correct volume loss in the face. For example, some of the common uses of Radiesse include augmenting the chin and jawline, restoring volume to the cheeks, plumping lines and hollows, and treating undereye puffiness and dark circles. Results from Radiesse treatment can last 18 to 24 months.
Belotero Balance is a newer hyaluronic acid dermal filler that is flexible and smooth, creating consistent results in various areas of the face. For one thing, Belotero differs from other hyaluronic acid fillers due to its proprietary Cohesive Polydensified Matrix (CPM) process. Treatment is comfortable and effective at reducing signs of aging around the mouth and eyes. Results generally last 5 to 7 months.
