Dermal Fillers

Dermal Filler Options: Things You Need to Know

Dermal Fillers Dermal fillers fill an important role in the world of beauty. The more we have come to understand what contributes to youthful facial contours, and what depletes them, the more options we’ve seen developed. Fillers and other injectables have been some of the most popular treatments for well over a decade. We are pleased to offer options to help our patients achieve their desired outcome. Here, we discuss why those options are so valuable by comparing two products, Juvéderm and Sculptra.

About Juvéderm

When we refer to Juvéderm as just “Juvéderm,” we give the impression that it is a single product. It’s not. Juvéderm is a family of dermal fillers, each made with hyaluronic acid. Several types of Juvéderm exist because each has a particular particle size of hyaluronic acid to achieve specific consistency. Product density matters because the skin on various areas of the face is different. We needed a Juvéderm product that was soft and supple for the lips. We need one that is more structural to contour the cheeks. Some of the areas commonly treated with Juvéderm products include the jawline, lips, creases around the nose and mouth, cheeks, and under the eyes.

Juvéderm offers the benefit of immediate reward. As soon as the filler is introduced beneath the skin, it begins to bind to water molecules. The increase in water molecules plumps the skin to smooth wrinkles or build contours. Depending on the particle size used, Juvéderm may last from 3 months to 2 years.

About Sculptra

Sculptra is often called a dermal filler but it’s more than that. This product is made of particles of poly-L-lactic acid. It was first approved by the FDA to correct the facial atrophy that often affected HIV patients. Today, Sculptra is used to correct signs of aging that make the face look gaunt. Examples include deflated cheeks and narrowing at the temples. Sculptra does not fill in areas of deflation immediately, it works by stimulating an increase in collagen production. Collagen is a vital protein involved in supporting firm and supple skin. To achieve a sufficient level of collagen production, 2 to 3 Sculptra sessions are scheduled. The production that occurs after this series of injections can sustain a more youthful face for 2 years or longer.

Are Fillers the Refresher Your Face Needs?

This has been an interesting year, to say the least. Its events have invited us to look at ourselves more closely in a few different ways. In addition to revisiting our values, many people have spent the better part of 2020 also seeing their faces more frequently. The technology that has allowed people to work remotely has also shown us where we may benefit from a beauty boost. Some outlets have reported a marked increase in the number of facelift consultations that have taken place in the last several months. Additionally, we’re seeing more patients for injectables. Here, we discuss how the aging process affects the face and how fillers may be the ideal solution.

There is More to the Aging Face than Wrinkles

Wrinkles are an inevitable part of life. So are various other changes that come shortly thereafter. Sometime during a person’s 40’s or 50s, they begin to notice that their face seems to be changing shape. This originates with the breakdown of fatty tissue in the cheek region. This breakdown may begin with the cheeks but it doesn’t end there. The fat that degrades in the mid-face eventually finds its way to the jawline, where it settles as jowls. These changes come courtesy of a marked decrease in collagen and elastin that make up the skin’s foundation. The decrease also affects the lips, causing a thinning of the vermillion, the fleshy part of the lips.

A Facial Refresher with Fillers

As we have learned the factors that contribute to facial aging, we’ve become experts at creating ways to counteract them. Fillers are a prime example. Dermal fillers are products that add volume to the skin. When injected beneath a crease or wrinkle, a filler brings tissue to a smooth surface. When introduced to various areas of the face, a filler can restore fullness and contour as needed for youthful beauty. Some of the common areas include:

  • Under the eyes. Fillers are commonly used beneath the eyes to resolve circles and bags. The skin around the eyes is delicate and thin, so has less volume to begin with. When the fullness of the face has degraded, the eyes may look dark or hollow. Conversely, they may develop bags. These issues can be eradicated with a few injections into the crease where the cheek meets the lower eyelid.
  • The lips. For some time, the lips were an afterthought. Ever since Kylie Jenner made voluptuous lips the “it” thing, this part of the face became one to enhance. In fact, specific fillers have been developed solely for this area.

Everyone ages in their own unique way. One of the great things about injectables is that treatments can be customized to address each changing face. To schedule your dermal filler consultation at our Cincinnati office, call 513.985.0850.

Now is a Great Time for Dermal Fillers!

A desire to look our best is not uncommon. Humans have exhibited this desire throughout hundreds of years, using a variety of strategies to ward off the cosmetic signs of aging. It’s safe to say that we have developed an array of far more sophisticated methods dermal fillers than our ancestors had at their disposal. Today, men and women who want to address their cosmetic concerns can do so with surgery like the facelift. However, far more often, we meet people who want to avoid surgery, at least for the time being. In these situations,  may be ideal. This is why.

Dermal fillers get immediate results.

Do you know that little phrase, instant gratification? Yes, it’s something we’ve come to expect these days. It’s one of the best things about dermal fillers. People come into our Cincinnati office with deep laugh lines, flat cheeks, thin lips, or depressed scars and they walk out looking quite a bit different. This is because dermal fillers deposit specific chemicals like hyaluronic acid to add volume at a precise depth beneath the skin’s surface. Because providers can see the effects of dermal fillers while they are administering treatment, there is little risk (in experienced hands) of overfilling.

Dermal filler treatment needs no downtime.

Historically, plastic surgery has been the only way to correct the signs of aging. Plastic surgery cuts and repositions tissue. This is an excellent way to achieve long-term results. However, there is some downtime needed to allow swelling and bruising to subside. With dermal fillers, we avoid that. Most patients go right back to their normal activities with minimal redness and pinpoint swelling at injection sites.

The results of dermal filler treatment last for months.

Since the first dermal fillers were developed several years ago, a number of formulations have emerged. The reason for the wide selection of dermal fillers has to do with the density of the strands of volumizing particles. Density makes some fillers great for softer areas like the lips and others ideal for adding structure to curved areas like the cheeks. While individual results can vary, softer fillers can last up to nine months, while more cohesive fillers like Juvéderm Voluma can last up to two years.

There are several benefits to getting dermal fillers in addition to those mentioned here, including the natural boost in confidence and mood that comes from feeling your best. To schedule your filler treatment with us, call 513.985.0850.
