When you want to put your best face forward, the signs of aging come as a very unwelcome surprise. To correct, or even postpone, cosmetic concerns like crow’s feet and worry lines, many adults in the Cincinnati area are visiting Dr. Donna Krummen for Botox.
Why Should I Consider Botox®?
Botox is a convenient, cost-effective treatment that goes beyond the average wrinkle-reducing solution. We are seeing a much wider range of uses than we did just ten years ago, with many of our patients seeking treatment as a way of postponing the formation of new lines and wrinkles. Coupled with a good skin care and sun-savvy habits, Botox is an excellent aspect of a well-rounded beauty regimen.
What Is Botox®?
Botox is the cosmetic prescription medication that was developed after years of clinical use involving OnabotulinumtoxinA. Prior to cosmetic use, this mild neurotoxin held a longstanding position as an effective therapeutic treatment for children and adults with various neuromuscular disorders. To date, OnabotulinumtoxinA continues to be valuable in clinical and cosmetic medicine.
What Are The Benefits Of Botox Treatments?

- Conveniently refreshing the face; no sedation, incisions or downtime.

- Worry lines on the forehead
- Drooping brow
- Crow’s feet
- “Bunny lines” across the bridge of the nose
- Lines around the mouth
- Marionette lines
- Downturned mouth
- Chin indentation
- Platysmal bands

- Experience moderate-to-severe facial wrinkling
- Have wrinkles around/between the eyes, around the neck, and on the forehead
During your consultation, Dr. Krummen will perform a thorough examination to determine whether you are an ideal candidate for Botox.

How Does Botox® Work?
The active ingredient, Botulinum toxin type A, works to block the nerves which cause your facial muscles to contract. These muscle contractions are responsible for the formation of many facial wrinkles. By temporarily paralyzing your facial muscles, BOTOX® can help soften the wrinkles that have developed over a period of time.If you would like to restore a more youthful facial appearance, but aren’t ready for an extensive plastic surgery procedure like a face lift, then a BOTOX® treatments may be right for you.

How Is Botox® Injected?
Getting Botox is relatively easy and convenient. It is recommended that you avoid taking vitamin E, ibuprofen, and aspirin for 10 days prior to your treatment as a way to prevent unnecessary bruising.
Botox appointments begin with a brief consultation during which you discuss your areas of concern and we assess your skin. If you are concerned about your comfort level, we can apply topical numbing gel at this time to allow it time to absorb. Injections themselves are not painful due to the small needle size needed. The entire process usually takes no more than 30 minutes.
How Long Does Botox® Last?
Everyone is different when it comes to the metabolism of injected products, including Botox. The average lifespan of results extends between 3 and 6 months, at which time retreatment may be performed to keep skin looking smooth and young.
What Is The Recovery From Botox?
Botox is a very mild injectable treatment that does not require a lengthy recovery. In fact, there really is no recovery to speak of. It is possible to return to work right after treatment or to resume most other activities. We do recommend that exercise be postponed until the next day, and that patients avoid bending and lying down for the first 4 hours after treatment. The treatment area should also not be disrupted by rubbing for the first 48 hours after injections, as this may cause product to migrate to surrounding tissue.
How Many Botox® Treatments Will I Need?
The number of units needed depends on the treatment area and severity of the problem. As an example, mild frown lines may diminish with as little as 6 units of Botox. Moderate to severe frown lines may need as much as 15 units. As far as actual injections, six or more is usually the norm.

Are There Risks To Botox Treatments?
The side effects of Botox are typically limited to mild, temporary redness, swelling, and bruising in the immediate treatment area. In some instances, a mild headache or achy feeling may occur, diminishing over a day or two. More severe side effects, such as lingering fatigue or drooping, are rare. The full extent of potential risks and side effects can be discussed during your consultation with Dr. Krummen.
