Stimulate Collagen Growth
Turn back the hands of time with the Skin Pen II! This microneedling procedure is the newest treatment available, targeted at providing patients with a non-surgical option for achieving the youthful skin they desire.
What Is Microneedling?
Microneedling, or collagen induction therapy, is a minimally invasive procedure that uses tiny needles to create multiple microscopic injuries in the epidermis and dermis over a 60 minute treatment session. The injuries trigger the production of collagen and elastin, the building blocks of smoother, healthier looking skin.
Healthy skin cells then work to rejuvenate skin from inside out, resulting in a more evenly toned, tighter and more radiant skin.
What Does The SkinPen Treat?
Microneedling is ideal for treatment of fine lines, acne scars, stretch marks, hyperpigmentation, as well as improving the skin’s overall appearance giving it a healthy-looking glow! Patients usually require multiple treatments for optimal results.
Who Is A Good Candidate For Microneedling?
The SkinPen microneedling treatment is beneficial and safe for most patients. This treatment is minimally invasive and does not cause wounding or hyper-pigmentation of the skin. Unlike other cosmetic skin treatments, age or skin tone is not a concern. A better question is who is not a good candidate for this treatment. You might NOT be ideal for this procedure if you:
- Have and active acne outbreak
- Suffer from diabetes
- Take blood thinning medication
- Have active HSV outbreaks
- Are pregnant or nursing
If you are still unsure if this procedure is right for you, be sure to ask Dr. Donna Krummen during your consultation.
Microneedling Explained
Benefits Of Collagen Induction Therapy
There are many benefits of micro-needling due to it’s non-invasive nature. Benefits include:
- Reducing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles
- Improving the appearance of acne scars
- Reducing the signs of aging
- Improving skin imperfections such as stretch marks or age spots
- No recovery time
- No major side-effects
While it is not a permanent solution, it is a great option for people who are looking to improve their appearance.
Microneedling Results
The effects of the SkinPen treatment are not permanent. While the treatment stimulates the production of collagen for natural skin healing, the effects of aging will still take place. For the best results, patients get return for follow ups every four to six weeks. Results of this treatment are not immediate, and often take two to four weeks to become noticeable.
How Many Microneedling Sessions Will I Need?
The number of sessions you receive will depend on what you are getting treatment for. Getting three to six sessions can offer the right results for most people. You can book sessions four to six weeks apart, allowing your skin the time it needs to renew itself by creating collagen and elastin. For more complex issues, like deep scarring, you may need up to eight sessions.
Recovery and Aftercare for Microneedling
You can leave immediately after the procedure because there is no downtime. Redness and some skin irritation are normal for two or three days after treatment, and they will resolve on their own. We will provide topical creams and lotions to soothe your skin. Avoid using makeup and stay out of the sun for 48 to 72 hours after the microneedling procedure. We advise our patients to avoid using retinol, exfoliants, vitamin C serums, or anything scented on their face for at least 48 hours. Remember to use sunscreen at all times for a few weeks after a microneedling session.
Can I Combine Microneedling with Other Procedures?
Although you should not have microneedling done at the same time as a chemical peel, you can opt for a chemical peel before the microneedling procedure. The chemical peel will remove the outer layers of skin, and when you get microneedling a few weeks later, it will boost collagen production in your new skin. Getting microneedling after Botox is also an option to reduce fine lines and wrinkles. After Botox, you want to wait at least two weeks to let the injectable settle before turning to microneedling.
Is Microneedling Painful?
You will not feel pain because we apply an anesthetic cream to the treatment area before beginning your procedure. We use micro-fine needles to create shallow wounds, and most people experience only a warm, scratching feeling as the tool we use moves around the treatment area. You may feel the tool more around the bonier areas of your face, like your jawline, forehead, and hairline. Before the procedure, avoid using creams that increase skin sensitivity, like retinoids or exfoliants, to minimize any pain.
Risks Of Microneedling
The SkinPen microneedling treatment is a non-invasive, low-risk procedure. However, low-risk does not translate to no-risk. Potential side effects of microneedling include:
- Scarring
- Infection
- Bleeding
- Bruising/swelling
